Exhibition Design & Lighting
Photographic

The China Exchange is a venue in the heart of London’s West End. Their exhibitions coordinator contacted our design studios to provide lighting design consultancy on their up an coming exhibition.

This photographic exhibition would show for the first time 32 rare images taken by Thomas Child. These early Chinese images date from around 1878 and are of Peking (now Beijing) life and architecture.

Following our site visit the collections curator in New York called our lighting designers directly to discuss our proposed design options.

After many further conversations our lighting designers moved onto providing the curator and collector with a potential exhibition design layout. This proposed exhibition layout would overcome the limitations of the space and show their rare photographic images to their optimum.

This included the building of free standing temporary walls and the installation of temporary focusable LED lighting.

The venue was only equipped with ambient uplighters and almost useless when lighting art installations or exhibitions. Therefore another temporary lighting solution had to be found.

Eventually it was agreed to use 12 volt tensioned wires stretch around the room, these would simple disappear amongst the existing busy air handling equipment.
Once the lighting system was installed the use of 3000K, LED lamps and fittings were utilised. Our lighting designers added various light filters to the LED lamps to change beam angle and intensity, whilst light levels (Lux) were measured an adjusted to agreed conservation lighting tolerances.

It was the first time working with this New York based client but a good relationship was quickly forged. Over the next two months the art collector relied on our design expertise and advice. This covered almost all aspect of creating and exhibition of this type, including graphics and marketing materials.

The exhibition was completed with a day in hand and to the delight of the art collector, curator, scholars and the public.

The conclusion being that it is possible to produce an exhibition which is aesthetic, informative and beautiful lighting in the shortest of time and for the smallest of budgets.

“That is wonderful
- I am all the more grateful for your support after your wonderful efforts to make the exhibition so successful” – New York Collector

"Thank you Simon – you have been a real gift on this exhibition" - Curator
